All About Acids!

All About Acids!

I know what you might be thinking….. acid on my face?!! That sounds like something from a horror movie!

Actually, certain types of acids can be super beneficial in achieving healthy skin. Our body even produces some of these acids!

Using acids in your skin care routine or monthly treatments can improve the skin in many different ways!

Benefits of acids in skincare:

- Reduce fine lines/wrinkles
- Increase cellular turnover that slows down naturally as we age
 - Brighten skin
- Prevent breakouts
- Hydrates skin

These benefits can come from many different acids that work on different levels. Here are some common acids we use in skincare.

So… How do acids work in skincare?

Acids cause a physiological change in the skin. These key performing ingredients bring our skins pH down to an acidic level and helps dissolve the dead skin cells on our face creating cell turnover which keeps our skin looking healthy and young.

Where do these acids come from?

Acids can be found naturally in plants/foods, for example:

    - Glycolic Acid is derived from sugarcane
    - Lactic Acid was originally discovered in sour milk
    - Mandelic Acid is derived from bitter almonds
    - Malic Acid is derived from apples
    - Salicylic Acid is derived from willow trees
    - Ferulic Acid is derived from nuts/seeds
    - Ascorbic Acid is derived from citrus fruits

This does not mean it is okay to apply lemon juice straight to your skin! Just because lemon contains ascorbic acid and is very natural, doesn’t mean it is safe to use. Acids can cause damage when not used properly so we definitely recommend consulting with a professional before incorporating them into your regimen.

How to use acids in skincare:

Consulting your esthetician about new skincare products with acids is important so you can use them properly. Not only can you damage your skin you might be using the wrong product and you won’t get the results you want. On top of skincare every day, you can schedule an appointment to get monthly treatments to really utilize the benefits of acids!
